Eight departments run Hearts for the Homeless International, and none of them work in isolation. A single blood pressure screening opportunity touches most of them: Expansion opens the chapter, Human Resources recruits and onboards the volunteers, Medical Information supplies the protocol and the teaching materials, chapter operations keeps the event on schedule, Research turns the readings into evidence, Finance and Grants pays for the supplies, and Marketing tells the community what happened.
01
Two operations departments, one network
Chapter operations is split in two because the work genuinely differs. National Chapter Operations supports 53 chapters across the United States through five regional directors and ambassadors. International Chapter Operations runs from Amman, Jordan, covering South America, Africa, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Europe. Both hold the same 48-hour response standard for chapter correspondence.
02
Student-led, with real accountability
Every one of these departments is led by volunteers, most of them students, and each publishes its mandate, its operational pillars and the people responsible for them. Departments report into the executive committee documented on our governance page, and the Research Department is deliberately kept independent of the review board that approves its studies.
03
Where the departments came from
The structure grew out of necessity rather than a plan. Hearts for the Homeless began in 2015 as one student group in Orlando; as chapters multiplied, the jobs a handful of founders once shared between them — recruiting, funding, protocol, publishing, storytelling — each became a team in its own right with a lead accountable to the executive committee.
How many departments does Hearts for the Homeless have?
Eight: Expansion, National Chapter Operations, International Chapter Operations, Medical Information, Research, Finance and Grants, Human Resources, and Marketing.
Which one should I contact?
Expansion if you want to start a chapter, Human Resources if you want to join one that already exists, Marketing for press and partnerships, Finance and Grants for donations, and Research for study collaborations. If you are not sure, the contact form routes it for you.
Can students join a department directly?
Yes. Most roles across the departments are filled by volunteers from active chapters, and Human Resources handles recruitment, orientation and onboarding for all of them.
Do the departments run screening opportunities themselves?
No. Chapters run screening opportunities on the ground. The departments set the standards, supply the materials and the funding, and make sure no chapter is working without support.
Where do the departments sit in the wider organisation?
Under the executive committee. Nine officers hold portfolios that map onto these departments, and the full reporting structure is set out on the governance page.
What does each department page contain?
What the team is responsible for, who leads it, and a direct route to reach them. Where a team holds documents chapters need — handbooks, brand assets, standard forms, financial reports — those live on its own page rather than in a general archive.
